(WTNH) — Russia continues to deploy troops to its border with Ukraine.
According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, they’ve now received reports that thousands of Russian troops, many of whom have heavy weapons, have been arriving in the Luhansk region in Eastern Ukraine.
By Sunday, the military’s intelligence has revealed that nearly 120,000 troops are deployed to the Russian border, many of whom are heavy weapons and armored vehicles. The military further revealed that Russian troops have been on military exercises there.
In addition, Ukraine’s ministry says it has asked the U.S. government to deploy F-16 fighter jets to help intercept Russian troops near the border. Officials say the fighter jets were scheduled to be sent over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian navy clashed with Russian forces near the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol. The fighting led to the deaths of six Ukrainian soldiers, and eight Russian soldiers.
The U.S. State Department has warned its citizens in Ukraine to “stay indoors.”
